‘Project SEARCH’ offers one-of-a-kind internships to students with disabilities

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - J. Allen Automotive, Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services, and Project SEARCH held a signing ceremony Thursday to create internships for students with disabilities in the automotive industry.

The nine-month program takes place at J. Allen Automotive and offers classroom instruction, workplace immersion, and career exploration opportunities.

“This is a big place. It’s a busy place. There’s so many things that go on behind the scenes and there’s so many opportunities that people don’t even think of,” Project SEARCH Internship Instructor Danny Wasilenko said.

Up to 12 students can take part in the program.

J. Allen Automotive’s internship is the first in the automotive industry for Project SEARCH.

The program is also available at Singing River Health System and Keesler Air Force Base
